Intervju med Kristen Bauer Van Straten
True Blood’s Kristin Bauer Van Straten is, as we all know, not only one of our favorite TV vampires, but she is also a big supporter of animal rights.
Growing up with many animals in Wisconsin helped to shape Bauer into the animal-rights and environmental activist she is today. She is an active member of the charities IFAW and the Amanda Foundation, which are charities also supported by this web site.
Below Kristin answers questions by Robin Bronk from The Washington Scene.
Robin Bronk: If you had five minutes in the Oval Office with President Obama, what would you discuss with him? What issue would you like him to know about?
Kristin Bauer: I can’t imagine how full his plate is — mine is pretty full, and I’m not the leader of the free world — but he also has much more help than I.
I know he is aware of these issues and, of course, many more, but an area I am very concerned about is the safety and treatment of our animals and our food. At the least we have the right to know what we are eating with full labeling. Animals also have a right to not be enslaved and tortured, not to mention the devastating effect farmed animals and engineered food may have on our bodies and the body of Earth. The impact of factory farms makes cars look like air purifiers.
RB: If you could give President Obama one piece of advice, what would that be?
KB: Giving him advice on his job is possibly as silly as him giving me advice on acting, but I did participate in electing him and I care about life on Earth.
I care about what corporations are coercing in Washington for their own profits, often against nature and life. I care about the revolving door of positions between large corporations, who now openly fund campaigns, and high-level positions in the White House. It’s easy to see who these companies are by looking up who gets what job in the White House and which industries get lots of help and a pass on some taxes and environmental protections. They fund campaigns, and one must campaign to stay in office. I get it. Not sure of the solution, as I understand wanting to keep one’s job. But … life is life and is miraculous, from a blade of grass to the mammoth blue whale, and there is a non-monetary price to pay for manipulating nature to increase stock prices. And the price will be paid by humans. Earth will be fine without us. She doesn’t need us to thrive, but we do need her.
RB: If you could ask President Obama one question, what would that be?
KB: The same thing we must all ask ourselves: When does the ends truly justify the means, and when does it not? Can you do mostly good, while being supported by and in turn helping corporations, whose only measure of “good” is profit, and how do you continue to weigh that out? As I believe we all must ask ourselves, in some measure, in our daily lives, if we are to get to continue to sustainably borrow Earth for our home, and also sleep in good conscience at the end of the day.

JONATHAN SOROFF: Do you believe vampires exist?
KRISTIN BAUER: In Hollywood? Energy vampires, certainly. Are you kidding me?
WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT TO YOU—PAINTING OR ACTING?
Well, one puts food on the table, and I’m very practical. The other one kinda helps me repair the chaos inflicted by the other. But of course, I’d have to pick eating and a roof over my head for the moment.
WOULD YOU RATHER BE REMEMBERED FOR PAINTING OR ACTING?
Interesting question. Painting was sort of my secret. Nobody knew that I did it, and it was sort of my secret sanctuary. I finally decided to tell people that I did this other thing, and I built my website. I still have a foot and a half in the acting world, so I’ll still say acting. But my painting is all me.
IS IT ANNOYING TO BE REMEMBERED AS “MAN HANDS” FROM SEINFELD?
[Laughs] Hmm…Man Hands or a great painter? I think you’d have to go with Man Hands, don’t you think?
WHO’D WIN IN A WRESTLING CONTEST: YOU OR RUTINA WESLEY [WHO PLAYS TARA THORNTON]?
Oh my God. After watching her last year, I’ve gotta go with Rutina.
IS IT A STRETCH FOR YOU TO PLAY SUCH A BITCH?
No! Not at all! Interestingly, amazingly, those shoes are really easy to step into.
WEIRDEST FAN ENCOUNTER?
She was wearing a cape, and she gave me a journal that she’d been keeping. It took me, a few friends and some cocktails to figure out what she was trying to say, and I think it had something to do with her being my maker as a vampire. She also grabbed my ass. [Laughs.] Pretty memorable.
DO YOU REALLY GET TO SEE ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD NAKED?
Yes! It’s a nice perk.
WHO’S THE SEXIEST MAN ON TRUE BLOOD?
It’s almost impossible for me to say at this point, because I’m so close to all these people. We’re in year five of our relationships. But I do have to say that one of the set crushes for a lot of the girls is Chris Bauer [who plays Andy Bellefleur]. This is the sexiest cast. Whatever your type, he’s there. But Chris Bauer is sort of the on-set heartthrob. Cute, sweet, cool. He’s the guy you’d marry.
DID YOU THINK THE SHOW WAS GOING TO BE SO HUGE?
I didn’t. As an actor, you can only hope that you’ll end up on a show like this. Watching it grow, and the fans, and the numbers, it’s just amazing. I don’t feel like we’ve reached the limit yet.
ANY THOUGHTS ON TWILIGHT?
I took my nieces to see it. They’re 15, 16, and they’re not allowed to watch True Blood yet. I thought, “Oh, perfect!” And it was.
THINK THIS WHOLE VAMPIRE TREND IS GOING TO RUN ITS COURSE ANYTIME SOON?
I thought it ran its course with Anne Rice. Then I thought it ran its course five years ago. And I keep seeing yet another vampire show every time I turn around. It seems to be a classic story line and archetype we keep coming back to.
IF YOU COULD, WOULD YOU BECOME A VAMPIRE?
I’ve thought about that. It’s a bit like that game “Would You Rather…” I tell myself that I’d be spiritually evolved enough to have faith in the system as it is—bodies are supposed to die. You’re a spiritual being. You’re not this vessel you’re in. But… would I be able to turn down perpetual youth? And they’re always wealthy and they always dress well. If you caught me on the wrong day, I’d say, “Oh, yeah.”
WHO WOULD YOU FEED OFF OF?
Boy, that would be fun, because you could feed off of people you hate. You could feed off of people you thought were hot. You could feed a little too much off of some politicians or celebrities you’re sick of. So, feeding off of Sarah Palin? That would be kind of awesome.
IS ANNA PAQUIN A LITTLE POCKET PAL?
[Laughs.] She is small, but she’s so not the personality who would be content sitting in someone’s pocket. She’s this fierce, incredible tour de force. She’s so funny and amazing. Pocket pal doesn’t really describe her.
WHAT’S THE SHOOTING SCHEDULE LIKE?
Slightly intense. Because I’m a vampire, I’m always going to shoot at night, when it’s really cold. But I’ve been really lucky. Fangtasia was a bar that existed in Long Beach, and they rebuilt it on the set—one advantage of being on a successful show. So I drive to a set, and I have a trailer to hang out in. The days are really long, and they’ll kill you for two days, but then you have time off, because it’s a huge cast with lots of plot lines.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: “VAMPIRES DO IT…”
Every which way.
THING YOUR FANS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU?
They’d be surprised to see how astoundingly un-together and unfashionable I can look.
DO YOU HAVE A GALLERY THAT REPS YOUR ART?
I don’t, and that was one of my projects on hiatus. I do a lot of commissions, so a lot of it I don’t keep. But that’s one of the things on my to-do list.
YOUR IDEA OF A PERFECT SUNDAY AFTERNOON?
I love when it’s raining, wearing PJs, a big Sunday breakfast at home, in my slippers, no makeup. That’s heaven.
WHAT COMES AFTER TRUE BLOOD?
There are always acting opportunities, but I’ve been incredibly lucky. I’ve gone from playing the dumb blonde to the killer vampire, and on Once Upon a Time, I’m playing a storybook character. So there will be more fun roles, and also, I’ve been writing. I’m working on a book, and I like to tell stories. That’s why I got into acting.
WHAT DOES YOUR HUSBAND THINK OF THE WHOLE TRUE BLOOD PHENOMENON?
He was taken by surprise by it, I think, because he was visiting Hollywood from South Africa when we met and had no intention of staying. So this was all new to him. It’s really interesting to see it through his eyes, because it’s even more virginal than coming from Wisconsin.
WORST AUDITION STORY?
Oh, there’s such a plethora. But singing was pretty memorable. I can’t sing, and I had to do this Donnie Osmond song for that Hugh Jackman show Viva Las Vegas.
BIGGEST LIE ON YOUR ACTING RESUME?
Well, most of them have been removed at this point, because when I started out, I didn’t have an acting resume and so I made one up. I was in some audition, and the casting director goes, “This character’s a lot like Terry.” I said, “Who?” She said, “From Bus Stop. On your resume.” I tried to cover by saying, “Oh! I thought you said Sherry!”
SO WHEN ARE YOU COMING BACK TO VISIT THE MUSEUM SCHOOL?
I’m not sure, but when I do I should probably confess to my teacher that I brought in my boyfriend’s paintings as my final exam.

Kristin pratar om Pams ansikte
Kristin Bauer van Straten seems to have spent a lot of time with the Masters FX people this year who made the special effects for Pam’s face falling off. We know that Pam is very vain, but it seems that she is so vain that her vanity may be even more important to her than Eric.
When we last saw Pam on True Blood, she was running away. Marnie (Fiona Shaw) or the vengeful witch possessing her had just cast a spell that began rotting away her face. And when it comes to her looks, Pam doesn’t play around.
“Every season, we learn something new about Pam,” Kristin Bauer van Straten, who plays the vampire, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “So, last year we learned she had a vulnerable side. And this year, her vanity is probably even closer to her heart than Eric. I didn’t think anything could supersede Eric, but I think her face does.”
Bauer told us that while they were able to get the process down to four hours, that scene last week where she pulled off part of her face took 9 hours to test and another nine hours to shoot. And while we may have found the action disturbing, Bauer says she was so busy with the technical aspects of the scene to think about how gross it was. It’s the difference between “watching a surgery and being a surgeon,” she tells us.
Needless to say, Pam isn’t happy about what has been done to her face and will now search for her own vengeance against the witches. “She goes crazy,” Bauer quickly sums up what we should expect going forward.
“Throughout the years, I’ve seen other vampires get to do stuff. You know Alex gets to rip a body apart Season 2, I think it was the opener, and I was so jealous,” she says. “So, I wanted to see if Pam had this warrior feral side. And she does.”
But with tension rising between vampires and humans in this post-Russell Edgington world on True Blood, times aren’t right for Pam to go off waging war with the witches.
“The combination of Pam not being a strategist and her face falling off — and she is pissed – is great,” Bauer says. “And the different avenues she tries to kill and maim is so fabulous. But, I love that she’s a fighter.

Intervju med Kristin om bland annat att prata svenska
Sydney Star Observer caught up with True Blood’s Kristin Bauer during trip to Australia and heard about her passion for the environment, playing a bisexual vampire, and Ryan Kwanten’s practical jokes.
As we previously reported, Kristin was in town to raise awareness about whaling for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Bauer took journalists on a whale watching cruise out past the Sydney Harbour heads .
Bauer said as someone with a passion for the environment it was great to be working on a show where social issues were the subtext.
“Everything about [True Blood] show pushes the boundaries, which is really fun to be part of,” said Bauer.
“The King of Mississippi — played by Denis O’Hare, a phenomenal actor — says the human race is going to become extinct and the vampires are going to lose their food supply.
“So there’s the issue of how we deal with having seven billion people on the planet.”
“It’s really great to be part of a show that not only looks amazing but is also so intelligent.”
Bauer, who brought South African husband Abri van Staten with her on the trip, said it was a great challenge to play the bisexual vampire Pam De Beufort on the show.
“I’m beyond thrilled to play such a wonderful unapologetic character — she doesn’t have an ounce of political correctness or apology anywhere in her and I just love that.”
And the show’s vampires “coming out of the coffin”, was another part of that subtext she enjoyed.
“[True Blood creator] Alan Ball has said that this is the era we live in. If the show had been made 50 years ago we’d have been talking about race relations and the civil rights movement.”
A challenge for Bauer has been her character speaking Swedish with Swedish co-star Alexander Skarsgard, who she said has been her dialect coach on the show.
“In the script it will say ‘will be in Swedish’ and my heart stops. I call Alex and in this wonderful world of Apple he records my lines in Swedish on his iPhone and emails them to me. That goes onto my iPod and I listen to Alex speaking my lines for two or three weeks and I repeat them hundreds of times.
“In those scenes instead of looking to the director I look at Alex after every take to see if I’ve gotten it right. For me its memorising gibberish so it’s slightly nerve wracking.”
Bauer said watching co-star Nelsan Ellis change into flamboyant gay drug dealer Lafayette Reynolds on set was a standout experience from the show — in real life Ellis is heterosexual and a father of young children.
“He’s just an incredible actor and he transforms so much when he becomes Lafayette, I’d met Nelsan before we’d started filming, but the first time I saw him do a scene I had to introduced myself again. He’s that seamless and believable as Lafayette.”

Kristen Bauer pratar om vampyrtänderna (fangs)
Kristin Bauer, True Blood Vampire Pam should know by now all the ins and outs of being a vampire, but as she describes below, she is still asking about how to wear her fangs while not lisping. But she knows enough to help teen vamp, Jessica to learn the ropes.
“To learn how to bite somebody, there should be a school,” she tells PEOPLE of using the sharp fangs the vampires wear. “We should have teeth school.”
Even talking with the chompers is tough. “I find Alex or Stephen [Moyer], who plays Sookie Stackhouse’s vampire beau Bill Compton, and say, ‘How the heck do I do this? … How do I not lisp?”
Moyer’s advice: “He said, you just have to take the pain,’ ” says Bauer with a laugh. “They’re so big and sharp that they go into your bottom lip. He was exactly right. If you try to avoid and find a place to make these comfortable in your mouth, it’ll never happen. You look like evil Bugs Bunny.”
So, is she worried she might actually draw blood when she nips a costar? “No, my fear is I don’t want to drool on this poor person!”
As for the show, Bauer’s character takes on the role of mentor to new vampire Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll). “It’s Pam’s view point that [Jessica] has a really crappy maker,” Bauer reveals. “She thinks Bill is a horrible maker because he doesn’t teach her how to be a real vampire. He’s teaching her how to be a PG vampire.”
But that will never do for Pam, who is known as a sarcastic — and deadly — sidekick to Eric. “Pam had to give Jessica the lowdown on what it’s like to be a real, you know, basically serial killer,” says Bauer. “She gives her some advice on the nitty-gritty of having people be your food.”
Asked what else she can reveal about her plotline in season 3 of True Blood, which premiered last Sunday on HBO, Bauer is coy. “I’ve tried to figure out what I can say,” she says, “and the only thing I’ve come up with is we get to see Pam’s PJs.”
In fact, Bauer finally gets to partake in some of True Blood‘s famously steamy sex scenes — she just won’t say who her partner (or partners) will be. “She does get some action,” Bauer says of her character. “There’s some hot action!” –Marla Lehner
5 saker om Pam
Lesbian Weirdness
Sookie may not have time for Pam’s “lesbian weirdness,” but her forceful yet playful flirtation with absolutely anyone who walks into Fangtasia is pure fun. Pam is willing to do and say anything to get the psychological edge over anyone she meets, which is a very handy trait.
The Outfits
Whether she’s dressed like a dominatrix stripper or an Avon saleswoman all in pink, Pam certainly goes out on a limb with her clothing choices. Since a lot of the other vampires seem fine dressing like typical goths or strange bikers, it’s nice to see a vampire add a little flair to her wardrobe.
Standing Up to Eric
Eric is certainly an intimidating guy, but in spite of being his subordinate, Pam has no problem standing up to him. She told him right to his face that she needed to tell the Queen about Bill’s disappearance, not caring about what a powerful sheriff like Eric could do to her.
The Hooker Backstory
Flashbacks are a big part of True Blood, and her quick comment to Lafayette about how she hasn’t been a “hooker” for a long, long time gave a glimpse into her backstory. Now we can just sit back and wait for the flashback to see Pam, pre-vampire, as a prositute.
Threatening Lafayette
Not only does True Blood love getting the men naked, but it also loves seeing a woman kick a man’s ass. When Pam held Lafayette and threatened him to sell the V quickly, it was a beautiful role reversal that True Blood is fond of, showing the woman taking charge.
KällaIntervju med Kristin Bauer
True Blood’s snarkiest vampire – and one of the sexiest – gave an interview recently to TV Guide. Kristin Bauer van Straten talked about Pam’s place in Eric’s life, becoming a series regular, werewolves, and saving our whales.
“TVGuide.com: Congrats on becoming a series regular. How does it feel?
Kristin Bauer van Straten: It’s so good, wonderful on many levels. I feel like I’ve been invited to the greatest party on Earth.
TVGuide.com: So we’ll see a lot more of Pam this season?
Bauer van Straten: Yes, we do. We also learn a lot more about her. I’m surprised to find that she has a sensitive side. It’s all about identity this year and peeling the onion, finding out the deeper layers of these characters. For every character, we see their integrity and also their vulnerability and sexuality. Everything is pushed a little further, but really deeper.
TVGuide.com: Speaking of sexuality, it has never been completely clear what Pam’s sexuality is. Will that delved into this season?
Bauer van Straten: It will become more clear. We definitely find out that she’s at least bisexual. There’s more than a hint on that one. [Laughs]
TVGuide.com: This season is so much more supernatural, but you’ve already been immersed in that playing a vampire.
Bauer van Straten: Yes. My world is more about my relationship with Eric [Alexander Skarsgård] and the politics of the vampire world. You get to see Pam’s astoundingly deep relationship with Eric and where her integrity and loyalty lies. She’s still sarcastic, she’s still wearing amazing clothing, but also we see the person behind the vampire.
TVGuide.com: How will Pam feel about Eric being distracted by Sookie (Anna Paquin) this season?
Bauer van Straten: We are dealing with that. Pam is such a great lieutenant because she wants to keep Eric’s eye in the game, but her main focus is to always have him around. She’d give her life for this guy. We’ll discover her purpose in Eric’s life.
TVGuide.com: With so many new characters this season, do you feel like their stories take away from the main characters?
Bauer van Straten: [Executive producer] Alan Ball and the team are balancing it so beautifully because the interaction with all these new characters gives opportunity to show the mettle of each character that we know already. How everybody is dealing with these things coming in actually gives us all the opportunity to show more sides of our characters, and that’s what’s definitely happened for Pam.
TVGuide.com: Will the werewolves be threatening the vampire territory at all?
Bauer van Straten: We have only seen the vampires dealing with humans, and clearly the fun there has been the vampires wanting to be accepted, but we know the vampires can kick the human’s a–es, but now we have this other supernatural thing that has a history with vampires and that adds a whole new level of complication and danger. Also: It’s sexy.
TVGuide.com: Yes, the promos for the third season have been pretty sexy.
Bauer van Straten: [Laughs] The actors they’ve hired are very sexy. There’s a lot of good eye candy for everyone now. It’s astounding. I look around at the table reads and think, “This is a good-looking room!”
TVGuide.com: Alan Ball told me that someone dies this season that “we’ll be happy to see go.” Do you agree with that?
Bauer van Straten: Yeah, I agree. Also, every single big happening this season sets a domino effect that is really interesting, exciting and complicated. It’s very, very brilliantly layered.
TVGuide.com: Tell me about your work with the International Fund for Animal Welfare [to preserve a commercial-whaling ban that may be overturned].
Bauer van Straten: I flew out to D.C. on Earth Day and I’m spending every moment I can because this really can be turned around if people just dialed the White House and said, “Don’t kill whales.” We just want to let Obama know that we don’t want whales being hunted. There’s no humane way to do it. They’re enormous, so they have to shoot them with an exploding harpoon. It’s awful.”
Are you ready for the season three premiere of “True Blood”? Tune in to HBO at 8:45 p.m. EDT for a special never-before-seen promo.
