Ausiello: Yes… and No. “There is a shower scene,” explains exec producer Alan Ball. “But it is not a direct re-enactment of the shower scene in the book. It goes to a slightly different place.” Emphasis on slightly. “Sookie and Eric are in the shower together,” confirms Ball, who assures me that, “Everybody who’s been waiting for Sookie and Eric to hook up, this will be a very good season for them.”

Sam Trammell fills us in a bit on what’s to come next for him and his shape-shifting friends and family in season 4 of True Blood.

At the end of season 3 viewers saw Sam fire his gun and nothing more. “What you didn’t see is whether or not I shot Tommy,” Trammell said, speaking by telephone from his Los Angeles home to Ian Spelling of the New York Times Syndicate, “and what had happened with Sam is that he basically took two steps back. He’d gone to Bon Temps to start a new life, and no one knew about this side of him, where he had a criminal background and these anger issues.

“So in Season 4 I’m dealing with that eruption that happened at the end of Season 3 and also with Sam’s past catching up with him,” he said. “It’s going to be cool, because we’ll see more of this shape-shifter community I’ve met, who are helping me deal with my issues, with all of the betrayal in my life, especially from my first adopted family leaving me because I was a shape-shifter. With this community I can talk about shape-shifting and heal myself a bit.

“And it’ll be cool for the audience, because they’ll learn a little more about shape-shifting, things we didn’t know about the mythology.”

Even better, Sam will be getting a love interest during Season 4 - and, no shocker, she'll be a shape-shifter. Janina Gavankar, late of "The Gates" (2010), will play the character, a, pardon the pun, shapely schoolteacher named Luna.

"Luna is a very interesting character, and Sam is very attracted to her," Trammell said. "She's not just beautiful, but she's also mysterious. She's like Sam in the sense that she doesn't want to reveal a lot about herself, about her past or who she is. Throughout the season those secrets start to reveal themselves to Sam, and some of them put Sam in danger.

"So what you've got is that Sam has given up the danger of being around the birth family you saw in Season 3 for this new danger of being around this community of shape-shifters, and especially Luna," the actor explained. "He's exchanged one kind of danger for another. There are some real surprises involving Luna, and let's just say that the birth family that I thought I'd cut myself off from comes back to haunt me as well in Season 4."

Between the third and fourth seasons of "True Blood," Trammell - whose credits also include "Maximum Bob" (1998), "Anonymous Rex" (2004) and "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" (2007) - found time to squeeze in an indie film entitled "Guns, Girls and Gambling." The ensemble cast also includes Dane Cook, Gary Oldman, Megan Park and Christian Slater.

"It's a really fun, hyper-real Western, kind of in the style of Tarantino," Trammell said. "It's a dark comedy, pretty different. I play a corrupt sheriff, Sheriff Hutchins."

Back when "True Blood" debuted - and ever since, really - everyone involved with the show has worried that pretty much any character could be killed off at any time. With a nervous laugh, Trammell admitted that, even after four seasons, he's not sure he has a long-term, steady job.

"Bon Temps is a dangerous town," Trammell said, "and no one on this show is 100 percent sure of anything. Every season that you last, you feel a little more confident that you'll return the next season, but you never know what will happen, and there are definitely going to be some surprises in that department this year.

"I'm just happy each year that I get."

Eric is constantly underestimated, and he’ll prove that in the first episode when he comes into possession of something extremely valuable. Also, episode 2 has some pretty great Eric moments, especially the last scene.

Ryan Kwanten has talked about some dark and disturbing scenes that are in Jason’s future, and he was right on point. One scene in episode 2 might even require eye covering if you’re squeamish.

There’s also this Deliverance vibe. Was that intentional?

Ryan: Oh, absolutely! I’m glad that you said that! I think the rawness of that film … there was such a visceral response you got from it. [This season is] supposed to look brutal and dirty. Jason’s life is very much on the line.

Will he ever acquire powers?

I feel personally that he wants a superpower or some sort of supernatural ability more than anybody else on the show. The comical element, then, is to not give a superhero power to that guy who wants it the most. [But] we’ve been sworn to secrecy for a lot of this stuff.

Have you noticed that there’s a certain Golden Girls–eating-cheesecake quality to the way Jason interacts with his sister?

Jason is really in a world of his own for certainly the first half of this season. Anna [Paquin] and I only have maybe two to four scenes together at most each season. Inevitably, we come together at some point — “Well, I almost died another time!” It’s always about an emotional high point. There’s a couple of really sweet scenes that I have this year with Anna. It’s some of my favorite stuff to do.

How much do you work out for this role?

I don’t work out for the role.

What?!

I just work out for my own sanity, to be honest. I grew up in a competitive, sporting environment. It's just sort of part and parcel of who I am. I'm one of three boys, and the easiest way for my mom to deal with all of us was to kick us outside.

Were you a badass as a kid? I heard that you survived a shark attack.

I've lived a very adventurous life. The vision you have is far more outrageous than what really happened. I was 12 years old. I was surfing. I fell off the top of the board trying to do a fancy move and put my hand down into what I thought was the top of a sand bank. I yanked it out, and blood spurted out. I could see the lifeguard rushing down from his tower. They did an analysis at the hospital that said it was a wobbegong shark, which is, like, a shark with no teeth. It just has gums. So I theoretically didn't get bitten by a shark — [laughs] I got gummed by a shark.

It's like blood is a recurring theme in your life: Earlier this year, you saved a guy who was bleeding on the street.

[Sounding embarrassed.] I don't know what it is about me. I very much like to put drama on the screen. And outside, I like to live as drama-free as possible. But I'm a coordinated guy, and somehow trouble likes to find me. I was heading home on a quiet Saturday, and there was a young guy lying in the middle of a busy intersection in Hollywood, just bleeding. So I jumped out of the car and [another man] came over, and together we lifted him off the road and checked his vitals. Then a couple minutes later, the ambulance took him away. Never saw him again.

Before you starred in True Blood, you starred as a surfer on the WB's Summerland, opposite a very young Zac Efron. What do you remember about him?

I always remember that he already had, at that age, a really good work ethic. With young actors coming up you also look at how in tune with the world are they — i.e., could it get to their head? I felt like he had this really old-soul quality to him.

He's pretty buff now, too. What would happen if the two of you arm-wrestled?

Oh, I'm a pretty dirty fighter, so I dare say I'd have him.

NATALIE: On a show where the term dead is, to say the least, fluid, we’ll discover yet another permutation when we witness a chilling resurrection. Tara has a new ‘do — and a hilariously entertaining new job. And if I were to tell you that the hottest human-vampire couple among the Bon Temps faithful is no longer Jessica and Hoyt, would you be as sad as I am? Eric wouldn’t be.

Gianna: What is your title and what is your job on set?

Dave: My job is most commonly referred to as “Video Assist,” but “Video Engineer” and “Video Playback Operator” are also used.  ”Assisting” the director throughout the filming process is what it’s all about.  The crux of my job is to always have every take of every episode shot to date for immediate reference on set…  This might mean simply making sure via playback that the performance was indeed what was desired, or sometimes it is for matching purposes to decide what a complimentary shot needs to be. Also, when visual effects sequences are being filmed, I provide the ability to line up multiple camera passes… for instance, when a character morphs into something less, human.  In order for this to happen, I manage a few carts of modified computers, monitors, routers and other quirky gadgetry. At one cart sit the director, writer and producers to observe the exact live camera framing of the shots as they occur a few feet away.  I meanwhile sit at my own cart and make sure I don’t miss anything!  As the camera shoots film, that image is simultaneously split into a video ‘tap’ that I get my feed from.  I also get an audio feed from the Sound Mixer and in fair trade, send the Sound Mixer an image from each camera.

Gianna: True Blood shoots a lot of nights… What’s that like?

Dave: To be completely honest, I don’t feel that we shoot any more nights than most normal features.  When a scene in the script starts with EXT Night: well, you’re pretty much in for an all nighter… but frequently night scenes take place indoors, which means ON STAGE.  I can hardly think of a film that doesn’t have night scenes, but then again, this is a vampire show, so perhaps we do have just a “few” more night scenes.  It’s honestly not that bad though, because we have a truly outstanding crew and besides… True Blood always provides something different!

Gianna: Where are you shooting right now?

Dave: Right now we are at a practical location in Hancock Park, and surprisingly during the day!

Gianna: Anything you can share with us about the scene that’s up?

Dave: It makes me cringe a bit and of course has a lot of blood in it.

Gianna: Any particularly fond memories from the set?

Dave: We had a scene late last season in which someone gets beheaded.  During that, we had a VFX element to shoot… this one being a thick splat of blood on the floor.  Sounds simple enough, just fill a balloon with fake blood and throw it on the floor, right?  Apparently they used a pretty thick balloon as it took about fifteen throws to get the poor thing to finally break.  It became comical to the point that I put a video loop up on the screens of a spinning head.

Gianna: Team Eric or Team Bill?

Dave: Undecided… I need to learn each one’s true motivation.
