As if there were ever any doubt, Bon Temps will establish itself as our nation’s most undesirable town to live in when True Blood’s fourth season premieres June 26 on HBO.

“There’s going to be a lot of people not getting along,” says Joe Manganiello, who plays hunky werewolf Alcide Herveaux. “The witches are starting trouble with the vampires, and the werewolves, of course, don’t like the vampires, either. And the fairies don’t like the vampires.” Mix in a grotesque meal and a feathery feud, and you have a true recipe from hell. Here are some tidbits to get your blood swirling.

GROSS GRUB
Grab your barf bags! Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and his witchy boyfriend Jesus Velasquez (Kevin Alejandro) will face a culinary challenge straight out of Survivor. “Lafayette and I go on a huge adventure where some unfortunate things happen,” Kevin reports. “We end up having a very creepy breakfast with some really interesting people, and Lafayette has a real hard time with it.” So what’s on the menu? Cagey Kevin tells me the Bayou boys will chow down on one of these three delicacies: a) a cow face, b) a goat tongue or c) poisonous snake venom. “It’s going to turn your stomach!”

FOWL PLAY
Shape-shifting brothers Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) and Tommy Mickens (Marshall Allman) will be taking to the skies in a feathery owl versus hawk mid-air chase. The scene required both men to strip down in the middle of the woods on a cold winter night in Los Angeles. “At one point, I had to match the trajectory of a hawk flying up to a trainer on a crane by jumping high and spreading out my arms to fly off,” recalls Marshall. He adds that this is only the beginning of the menagerie madness as “Tommy takes shape-shifting to a whole other level with a unique wild-card creature that will prove to be a game-changer in Bon Temps’ supernatural power play.” Hmmm… Am I hearing the thunderous footsteps of Godzilla?

I talked to Ben Hayes, the writers’ assistant, about this one, because he was in the room when the writers were deciding how to characterize the witches. He said that it was inspired by the characters in the fourth book by Charlaine Harris, but that in bringing Marnie to life, they were trying to create a character that seems real, but slightly “off.” The witches in Season 4 all follow that approach and are a range of personalities and looks.

Ben also shared that “as far as the magic goes, there was a good deal of discussion in how to depict it in a visual medium. The writers wanted the magic to suit the stories and nature of the show, but also to meet the needs and opportunities of production. Several different traditions were researched and discussed in order to come up with a unique take on witches, witchcraft and magic in the world of ‘True Blood.’”

TRUE BLOOD, Season 4, Episode 9, “Run”

[JOYCE WATNEY] 20, this self-satisfied young woman “who loves the sound of her own, bleeding-heart voice” hosts the “Just Say No to Hate” festival of tolerance and media event, to join together vampires and humans in common cause. She’s proud of founding the “Living Dead Student Alliance” at her school. 3 speeches & 1 line, 1 scene.

[DEALER] A male V dealer in his mid 20s, he meets a customer in a seedy alley and warns her against taking too much V. He’s disturbed by the customer’s appetites. 3 lines, 1 scene.

Chris Bauer: If Andy were real and had to answer that question, I’m sure he’d say, “One day at a time.”

Will we learn more about Andy’s personal life this season and meet his sister?

CB: Yes. We will meet Andy’s sister and, from my observation, learn that she got the looks in the family. And we get to see a peek or two into Andy’s family life and past, which I’m so happy about.  I really appreciate the chance for the audience to get to know another dimension of Andy Bellefleur and I see it as an opportunity to authenticate and humanize a guy that is more complicated than he appears.

In Season 4, can Andy step up to the plate and be a good sheriff?

CB: Andy IS a good sheriff.  Think about what’s on his plate.  It’s a supernatural smorgasbord.  The fact that Bon Temps’ citizens lock their doors at night has nothing to do with the crime rate, which is probably relatively low considering that when the sun goes down, the place is a playground for the other world. Seriously though, one of the things I like about True Blood is how it plays with perceptions.  Andy’s flaws have always certainly been out in the open, and that makes him an obvious target for scorn and criticism. But all in all, he’s a full-on dedicated public servant.  He’s very serious about his civic duty and does whatever he can to fulfill it, to the complete detriment of his personal life.  And his ego is entirely connected to his job performance.  It’s certainly not in his fashion sense.  As far as I’m concerned, the fact that Merlotte’s closes each night without a bar fight is proof enough that he’s a good sheriff.

Any chance Andy gets a love interest this season?

CB: If I wish he would, would that make it happen?  The guy needs to touch someone who’s not under arrest.  A woman would be ideal.

When will Andy have his first prerequisite naked scene?

CB: Does anyone really want to see that?  Though I’d welcome the chance to remind America what a real 44-year-old man looks like, I’d still have to be naked in front of strangers, wouldn’t I?  And have you seen the gentlemen I work with?  If I didn’t see them with my own eyes, I’d think they were computer generated.  I work out five days a week, how come I still have a double chin? I guess that’s beside the point. There are plenty of people who think I’m hot, and I’ve met them both personally. Bring it on, I’ll show ya what i got.

If you could be any True Blood beast, what would it be?

CB: If I could look like Joe Manganiello, I’d be him. I mean Alcide. I mean a werewolf.

If you could have any True Blood super power, what would it be?

CB: Without question I’d be a shifter and I would shift into a ten year younger version of myself. Every ten years.
